Oaxaca State Police Commissioner Francisco Santiago García, accompanied by personnel from the Secretariat of Government and the Peace Coordination, entered the municipality of San Dionisio Ocotepec in a multi-vehicle convoy to lead negotiations with the community assembly and secure the release of a detained police officer.
The officer, identified as Antonio Monterrubio, has been held in municipal jail cells since early morning following an armed clash between patrol unit 2371 and local community guards, known as topiles. Graphic images circulated on social media showing the injured officer have heightened tensions, prompting government officials to prioritize dialogue to guarantee his physical safety, provide urgent medical attention, and prevent further escalation of conflict in the Central Valleys region.
According to local residents of San Dionisio Ocotepec, community guards responded during the early hours to reports of armed individuals at a local crossroads. Upon arrival, the topiles encountered a group of masked men and requested identification. The individuals identified themselves as state police officers.
Because they were carrying firearms, community guards asked the officers to step out of their vehicle to be brought before municipal authorities. The officers reportedly resisted, and one of them began firing shots. Community guards managed to disarm and detain one officer, transferring him to the municipal palace. Residents stated that as the transfer took place, additional state police officers arrived and opened fire, causing local residents to emerge from their homes and respond to the aggression.
