Initially processed under femicide protocols, judicial authorities determined the need to reorient the legal framework toward a suspected contract killing, or assassination by commission.
The case is currently directed by the Second Provincial Corporate Penal Prosecutor's Office of Huaylas, overseen by prosecutor Raúl Godos Sedán alongside deputy prosecutor Sheyla Romero Zárate. The transition consolidates competence previously handled by specialized gender-violence prosecutors in the jurisdiction.
As part of urgent investigative proceedings, security forces and fiscal agents secured surveillance footage from a local lodging establishment in Caraz, supplementing technical examinations ordered to reconstruct the events. Intelligence operations enabled the National Police of Peru to locate and detain a 29-year-old suspect within the Lima district of Surco during morning interventions.
Authorities currently maintain two individuals under custody under charges of flagrante delicto:
- Luis Obispo Díaz: detained during personal search procedures where a firearm pistol was recovered.
- Ronal Toro Artila: located in Lima and subsequently transferred to Caraz to face judicial proceedings.
The violent incident took place in the municipality of Caraz, located within the department of Ancash, Peru, during regional campaign activities. According to police reports, Aponte Polo was conducting a political walkabout near the local municipal market alongside supporters when armed individuals launched a direct assault. The candidate sustained a fatal head wound, while several companions suffered injuries during the shooting.
Medical staff at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Caraz confirmed the candidate's death shortly after emergency admission.
