A suspect accused in the double femicide of a woman and her 12-year-old granddaughter was lynched in front of the municipal hall in Ostuacán, Chiapas, after a crowd forcibly removed him from local police custody.
The situation in the northern mountain municipality escalated over several hours on Saturday night as residents gathered in the central park to demand immediate action regarding the deaths of Míriam "N", 47, and her young granddaughter Ariana. Local officers, who were vastly outnumbered while holding two suspects inside a vehicle, were unable to contain the gathering crowd before additional reinforcements arrived from state security agencies.
During the confrontation, Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar issued an urgent message through social media, urging the population in Ostuacán to remain calm and allow the legal system to take its course.
"I want to ask the people of Ostuacán gathered in the Central Park to have confidence that the law will be applied," the governor stated. "Taking justice into our own hands does not restore peace and can bring more pain and legal consequences for innocent people. Violence generates more violence. I invite you to act with prudence and leave justice in the hands of the law."
Prior to the incident, state officials had announced that two individuals were arrested following discreet operational efforts by security forces. The Fiscalía General del Estado reported that the investigation began on Tuesday, October 20, after the missing persons report was filed for both victims.
According to official reports, specialized units deployed to the region located Míriam "N" in a rural plot she frequently visited. Forensic examinations determined that her death was caused by acute hemorrhage due to severe neck injuries inflicted by a sharp object.
Search operations continued until Friday morning, when search teams located the body of the 12-year-old victim. Autopsy results established that the minor died from mechanical asphyxiation by strangulation, sustaining severe head trauma, defensive injuries, and evidence of sexual aggression.
State legal authorities confirmed that the investigations into the double murder remain open to complete the official procedures related to the case.
